No one charts a course for mediocrity yet it seems it is a destination of choice for most of us in our Careers. As kids when asked what we want to do with our lives we are often filled with excitement and longing of the future. As we begin working majority of people realize that work is not quite as fun as we had dreamed and we often accept mediocrity as the norm. I often wonder what changes occur in us that make us become so cynical towards work.
There are many possible reasons but the truth remains that roughly 70% of people are dissatisfied with their current jobs and 40% of them have accepted their fate. Considering we spend such a short time on earth i don’t think it is right for us to spend the majority of the time purposely settling for an unfulfilled life. Don’t get me wrong I don’t think we will all wake up one morning and be working in our dream job but an old country song says “The living is all in the getting there”. If you don’t feel satisfied where you are then that is your heart signalling to you that you were called for a better purpose. It doesn’t mean you have to quit what you are doing but it does mean you should begin the quest to find what drives you.
There is a quote that says the richest place in the world is the graveyard as you will find hopes ,dreams and destinies that were never fulfilled because people settled for comfort and mediocrity. Settling for work that you don’t feel engaged in comes at the expense of reaching your full potential. I firmly believe each of us have unique traits, desires and experiences that allow us to positively contribute to the world. Time flies and one day you will look back at the life you lived and ask yourself the question “ Did I maximize all the skills and abilities that I was given?” Live each day of your life working towards being able to answer that question with a resounding YES!
The truth is work is a good thing and is an opportunity for us to make a difference and leave our marks in the world. It's important we change our perspectives about work and not see it as Golden slavery but rather as an opportunity to express the skills and unique talents given to us. If the work you do doesn’t allow you to do this then begin searching for how you can incorporate your unique abilities to your current position or begin to explore other avenues that you can make a difference.
