This Will Not Help You Get A Job

When I browse the internet I find that there are thousands if not millions of top ten lists for just about everything. The same can be said for the job search as there are thousands of different things that the experts propose will help you find a job. But how many of these lists really help you? After reading a top 10 list do you do anything about it? Or is it just entertaining reading to make you feel like you are doing something? I remember when I was searching for a job I read 100’s of articles and spent more time reading about how to find a job than I did actually applying for jobs. Don’t get me wrong I’m a firm believer in education and I think it’s important that we learn as much as we can about the job search before we begin but it’s important to correlate what you read to your results. Think of all the articles and lists you have read online and ask yourself the question “Did that article make a difference in my search?” If not then what was the purpose of reading it?

I often find myself getting so carried away with lists that I forget to act, a perfect example was when I first decided to build websites. I spent over seven months researching and educating myself about how to build one but when it came time to execute I forgot most of what I read and had to go back to remind myself what I had learned. After months of wasting my time I started reading with the intent to execute and got way better results.

As you proceed in your job search I would suggest that you focus on executing the information that you read in articles and not get bogged down in information overload as there is a lot of information out there. Some of the information is good but you can only read so much at a time. Focus on finding a balance between education and execution as you will never get results if you spend all your time researching.

The day I started focusing on the application of the information I had read from the book the two hour job search was when I started seeing results and getting calls back from employers. Make up your mind to do something for yourself today that will make a difference and don’t get bogged down in the paralysis of analysis.
