Top 3 Reasons You Aren't Getting Job Interviews

Applying for multiple jobs and getting no feedback can be quite frustrating. It often feels like you are at a party and no one is willing to speak to you despite the fact that you are in your best outfit. I specifically recall applying for a role in which I knew I was the best candidate for the job and was certain I would get a call back but alas it wasn’t to be. I spent weeks watching my phone and jumping to pick up when I saw an unknown number, unfortunately all that I got were tele-marketers and a reminder that I had missed paying my phone bill.

Why is it that despite having a “perfect resume” you are not picked for a job? I will mention the top three things that that prevent people from being selected.

  1. Level of competition for the job – In a tough job market or in highly competitive fields there can sometimes be 1000’s of well qualified individuals applying for the same job. Some of these applicants may have direct internal recommendations or may even have worked at that position before. There are things you can do to position yourself as an internal referral even if you don’t know anyone at the company for instance adding individuals from that organization as friends on linked in is a good start.

  2. Qualifications – Most companies put down a wish-list of criteria that they require of potential candidates but you can often apply even if you don’t meet all the requirement however some requirements are considered more important than others. It is your job to find out what the most important requirements are so that you can better judge what jobs to apply for. Learn what qualifications an organization covets by finding individuals working in the same role on Linkedin and reading what their daily job entails.

  3. Bad Resume –This is the factor that you have the most control of, you may not be able to control your competition and it may take considerable time and effort to acquire certain qualifications but you are responsible for the development of your resume. Things like spelling errors, poor readability and weak management of red flags are all reasons why employers will not hire you. A strong resume will at least guarantee that the hiring managers takes a look at your qualifications and considers you among the competition. Take your resume seriously and tailor it for each job that you apply for.

The job application process can be quite daunting and there are multiple things that can stand in your way but you also have some control and by ensuring you follow some of the tips and advice stated in this post you will stand a better chance of getting an interview.
