Don't Do This On Your Resume

Employers are not concerned about everything you have done in your life and all your qualifications. All they want to know is if you can be a positive contribution to their organization. Imagine you wanted to employ a stylist to get a haircut, would you care if your stylist had a diploma in Biology. Probably not, and though the stylist may think that getting a Biology diploma was a huge accomplishment in his life, you as the employer are only concerned about how he can help you fix your hair.

When writing your resume make sure you think from the perspective of the employer and ask yourself the question what do they want and then align your skills to meet their requirements. Job seekers often waste space explaining in great detail accomplishments and qualifications that have nothing to do with the job description. It is only after you have demonstrated that you can help the organization meet its requirements that you should mention any additional accomplishments you may have. If I wanted to get my hair cut I would rather pick a Good Barber than a Nobel peace prize winner. Winning a Nobel peace prize may be impressive to people but I would rather the emphasis be on the barbing skills and the Nobel peace prize be placed as a second component.

When writing a resume always ask yourself the question “Why would this matter to them?”. Don’t make statements like "I have a strong understanding of Hydraulic Modelling" .

You must explicitly explain how your understanding of Hydraulic Modelling can benefit the organization and why the reader should care. As an exercise you can list the reasons why an employer would care you have Hydraulic modelling experience e.g.

Models can be used to predict how much Oil will flow through the pipeline and support management in making critical decisions.

The statement can then be rephrased to say:

My knowledge of Hydraulic Modelling can be leveraged to support management in making better predictions of flow rates in the pipeline which will improve production and increase revenue. Remember employers are not really interested in what you did but how you can use it to help them make money.

If you want to tweak your resume then read each of your qualifications and ask yourself “Why would an employer care about this”

This single step will help you identify how to fix your resume
