Don't Give Up On Taking Action In Your Job Search

We often see the direct consequences of actions that we take, however it is impossible to see the missed opportunities we have had in life due to in-action. I recommended a good friend of mine for a job at my company and asked him to apply, he felt that he wasn’t qualified for the role and therefore never followed through. Months later we found out that he would have been a strong candidate if he applied since there were very few people that applied for the job. The truth is we will never know what might have been if he had taken the chance but it’s something that we should take the time to ponder on.

Don’t let internal dialogue stop you from acting

The problem with a lot of us is that we talk ourselves out of action by referencing previous experiences. If you have had a bad experience either by not getting calls back it’s easy to start having negative perceptions about your situation and yourself. The problem is that this thinking becomes self-perpetuating e.g. The less you believe in yourself the less you act and the less you act the less results you see which then validates your belief.

Every action begins with a thought and you must protect your thoughts at all times, it can be hard sometimes to feel good about a situation especially when all you see and hear is rejection but in those times you must cling to the positive image you have of yourself

“Measure yourself by your actions not by your results”

The job search can sometimes be compared to a sport e.g. Just because you practice doesn’t necessarily mean that you are going to win the next game BUT, If you consistently to do the right things then inevitably you will be successful.

You must have the same mindset when it comes to the job search no matter what happens measure yourself not on results because no one can have direct control over who calls you and when. The only person you have control over is yourself and you must ensure that you are consistently:

  • Identify the companies and roles you are interested in and investigate them and people that work there. You can do this through linked in and by sending inquiry letters to the organization.

  • Networking with others and speaking to them about your job search

  • Ensure that you resume is tailored to every job that you seek

  • Ensure that your online profile speaks well of you e.g. Ensure that your Facebook, linked in all shed you in a good light

Take these actions consistently and you will see results

I implore you to take action today and not wait for the perfect moment as it will never come
