Miserable with your job? Then do something about it

Do you wake up every morning dreading work and wishing you could do anything else but head to the office? According to statistics roughly 70% of people dread going to work in the morning, the question I often ask is “Does this have to be your reality?” Should we all just accept that work is not meant to be meaningful and we are all destined to spend our lives in drudgery?

There’s the quote that says if life gives you lemons make lemonade, what it implies is that you should make the best of whatever situation you are in. If you have a bad job then try and see the positive in it and make the best of the situation. I believe that this philosophy is flawed, if life gives you lemons and it’s not what you asked for then it is your responsibility to shove it back at life and work till you get the oranges you want.

I’m not saying you should start a revolt and walk out of your job today as you would most likely regret it. What I’m saying is that you should change the way you think about your current circumstances. Think about your current role as an opportunity to take the time to research and find out what you really want to do. I’m saying that if you aren’t satisfied where you are then you should be working towards getting there. It is okay to work a job that you don’t find appealing as long as you know why you are doing it e.g. to pay the bills until you can discover what you really want to do.

We were all born with a purpose but with bills to pay and lives to live it is easy to get lost and forget why we are really here. The problem is that once people find a job that satisfies their basic needs they quit trying to satisfy their higher callings in life. This is why 70% of people are miserable, because they only meet one level of satisfaction but never strive to find their true calling. You will often hear people occasionally complain about their jobs but they will never really do anything about it because it satisfies the basic needs and they are not willing to put in the effort to move to a higher level.

If you are frustrated with your current position or don’t feel you are utilizing your skills and talents to the best of your abilities then you are wasting your life and you owe it to yourself to find out what your real calling is. Stop complaining about your job and start taking the daily actions that will lead you to the life that you really want to live. Reach out to individuals doing what you are interested in and find out how they got there how they got there. Doing this will help you in two ways:

  1. It will help you learn about the position and if it is something you would actually enjoy

  2. You will learn how others have done it and have a road map for getting there

  3. You will connect with someone who is already in the industry and they can become your advocate when you decide to apply for a role in their organization.

I implore you to take action today and not wait for the perfect moment as it will never come
