Monday Morning Job Frustration

My favorite day of the week is Friday as I’m about to leave the office because I know that I don’t need to get back in till Monday. The saddest date and time is Sunday evening when I start prepping for work the next day as I know I have to head back to the grind.
Majority of people spend their lives living exactly like this e.g. drag out through the week to get to Friday and then run errands during the weekend then back to work on Monday. I want to challenge you to think of what you could do that would make you look forward to Mondays.
We often assume work is supposed to be miserable and well work and it is not supposed to be enjoyed just endured till we can retire. This should not be the case and even if work is drudgery then your life’s quest should be to find a way to get out of whatever it is that is making you miserable. It may not be today or even a year from now but you should really be seeking a way to do the thing you love.
Imagine if Hussein Bolt decided to become a piano player or a singer because everyone else was doing it or if Michael Phelps went off to become an accountant. If these guys had decided to travel the path that everyone else did then they would never have met their life’s callings and the world would have been denied their gifts. The question I have for you today is “What are you denying yourself and the world because you have conformed to everyone else’s ideals. You may not be the next Michael Phelps or Steve jobs but you were born unique and your background and experiences have shaped you to be a great at something even if you don’t know it. Are you utilizing your uniqueness to its full potential? Below are three questions to ask yourself:
Are your skills and talents being used to their full potential in the role that you are in? A friend of mine once said about his work – I feel like a Horse being asked to swim each day, if only they would allow me to run I would really make a difference. How often do you feel like your strengths are being marginalized? If you aren’t making the best use of your strengths then the work you are doing is not indicative of your true potential.
Are you Happy – If you are doing work that leverages your strengths you will be happier. The reason is that you will feel like you are doing work that is meant for you. Taking the scenario mentioned about the horse imagine taking a horse out the water and allowing it to run free in the fields. The horse would instinctively know that running was what it was born to do and would instantly be happier. There are other factors that can influence happiness e.g. working conditions and co-workers but if you are doing what you love it’s easier to manage that as you will feel a sense of purpose.
Are you motivated? –In an HBO Special, comedian Chris Rock spoke about the difference between a career and a job. “With a career,” he said, “there is never enough time. With a job, there is always too much time”. If you spend each day looking at the clock every 5 minutes and dreaming of the weekends then you may not be fulfilling your purpose. People that have found jobs that give meaning to their lives love coming to work in the morning and are always enthusiastic about what they are doing. You often see these people and ask yourself, why are they always so bubbly and engaged.
If you wake up each day miserable and looking forward to the weekend then there is something wrong and doing nothing about it is not an option. Remember that this is your life and every day wasted is gone forever, it’s your responsibility to take charge of it and find some meaning to it. You spend majority of your life working so you might as well do something that fulfills your purpose. It may not be easy but believe me it will be worth it:
Below is one thing you can do today which can help you find purpose:
Ask someone close to you what you are good at
Find out what you spend most of your time doing and things you do in free time
Connect with people on Linked-in if you find their jobs interesting and schedule meetings with them to see if the roles may interest you.
